Continuing the American theme there’s an amazing but legal blast by a 9-litre V8 Corvette Special along 50 miles of Nevada desert road at an average of, did we hear correctly, 235mph?

Over in mainland Europe the Lamborghini Diablo and Miura together with the Porsche 911 and Ferrari F50 strut their stuff on public roads and Europe’s favourite racetracks.

Back in Britain, we admire the full 16 feet and two tons of the imposing Aston Martin Vantage, then we discover that the Jaguar XJ220 was designed by the ‘Saturday Club’ – a bunch of factory moonlighters – but what a result!

Finally, with the highest speed, and the highest price tag, there’s the F1 McLaren, pitched against a Peugeot 306 and a Porsche 911 in a handicapped, but still unequal, single lap of the track at Silverstone.
